Journal #6 Chapters 16-19 Tom Robinson

We are finally in court and people are testifying. I just heard Mr. Heck Tate, Mr. Ewell and Mayella Ewell’s (Mr. Ewell’s daughter) testifying and I feel that I am up next. I know what I heard and I know that none of that is true. Actually some is true because of Mr. Ewell did go the Mr. Tate as they both said, but any part about me beating up Mayella and raping her. I know that she tried to kiss me first and that I didn’t want to hurt her, I had to get her off somehow without hurting her. But I know I didn’t hurt her at all and yet they say that she was bruised. I had nothing to do with her getting bruised, I am just a pauper that don’t hurt nobody. The only reason I came to her house is because she asked me to because she said that she had something for me. When I first heard that, I felt like she was being a nice person and was going to give me a cookie or something. I felt like she was happy that day and that I wanted to help her in any way possible. I can’t believe that even if she is the one that jumped on me, she still got me in this predicament. I feel like an idiot falling for a trick like this. I think that it wasn’t a trick, it was Mr. Ewell. He probably beat Mayella up before going to Mr. Tate and pretended that I did it. I feel that he is just a big fraud and he just doesn’t like black people like me. Now they are subsequent over me and that they want me gone. I feel like they would be willing to hurt people so that they can hurt me. I mean who in their right mind would beat up their own daughter just to frame someone. I can probably tell that he did beat her up because he is left-handed and she was hit on the right side. As people thought that it was irrelevant to have Atticus show that Mr. Ewell is left-handed, but I know that it proves that he was the one who most likely beat Mayella up. I think it was pretty stealthy for Mr. Ewell to do that, but I know that at one point people will find out that he was the one who did it. I really hate that this has happened and that people just hate the blacks for no particular reason.
