Quote #1:
I found out I was pregnant the same day that my father's rapid weight loss and chronic shortness of breath were positively diagnosed as end-stage pulmonary fibrosis. Said the Narrator. Page #3
The quote relates to the 5th question because it shows what the narrator's hardships were in America. It shows that she was having hard times in America with herself and family. It shows that she had a really hard life in America.
I think that the character is having very bad times right now and that she is smart enough to fix it. I think that she is a clever character that makes life seem very hard and I started off not liking her.
What did this opening quote making you think of?
Quote #2:
"We have struggled since we became an independent nation in 1804," Said The Narrators Uncle. Page #31
It represents the 3rd question because it shows the characters hardships in their home country that affects them. It shows all of the hardships that her families life had inside their home country. It also shows how hard the basic life of their home country.
I think that this affects me because of the same thing that happens in a lot of countries. Also I can connect to how life feels like in my eyes.
What do you feel like their home country is like after hearing this?

I liked the first quote you chose because it plays a major part in how the book continues on. As soon as you read that quote the rest of the story begins to unfold. Though I don't understand how 'it shows that she had a really hard life in America'. She was in Haiti when she found out her father's diagnostics, not America. She wasn't upset about being pregnant, she was nervous. Edwidge said herself that it was ironic that a life was leaving this world, and in its place was a new one.
The key word in the quote is "struggled", so that lets me know that Haiti is a 'struggling' nation. I know the reason for the struggle of Haiti is because they became an independent nation. That can be a big step for some nations because suddenly they have to do everything themselves and have nobody to use as a crutch. After reading about the guerrillas that were slaughtered by the US I bet that there are a lot of families in money trouble. Because usually the women stayed home while the men made money but a lot of men never returned home. So I think that Haiti is in chaos and is really struggling.
I really liked your first quote because you analyze the character extremely well. I also think you captured her true attitude on the whole deal.
On the second quote i liked how instead of analyzing the person you found a connection between you and the person. I also thought that you compared your self to the experience very well.
1st quote:On your question it really made me think, that family has some problems right now! I 100% agree with you there on how the family will get through it.
2nd quote: I think there home country is very poor, economically wise, it seems like they have lots of problems and i try to connect that to the government.
My answer has to deal with your quote because there problems in there nation has got to have something to deal with there government!
